Posts from the ‘TRIATHLONS’ Category

Within the past few weeks I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to train for the Louisville Ironman on August 26th..

With so many miles and three different events, how do I manage training, work, and life??? My concern came the other day when I ran back to back long runs…7 miles on Saturday and 8 miles on Sunday!!  NOT GOOD!!  And as my buddy Nate said, “Out right stupid!!”  Especially being so early in the season.  I literally couldn’t walk the next day and even questioned whether or not I had another stress fracture.  Fortunately, it was just my muscles reemphasizing what Nate had already said..  After this I was determined not to suffer like last year!! By God’s Grace I ran into another triathlete, Todd, who introduced me to Matt Fitzgerald,

the senior editor for Triathlete Magazine, and author of a ton of books. One, in which I started reading a week before I had even met Todd; “Racing Weight”.

At the time when he mentioned Matt’s name I thought it sounded familiar, but little did I know he would actually communicate with me.. I assumed he would be busy writing, training, and having a life…To my surprise he quickly responded to Todd’s email intro and was very willing to help!  Almost like a virtual coach at your finger tips!  He quickly suggested a plan for me and in a matter of 48 hours I had a 20 week training plan designed to get me to race day! In fact, it happens to be affiliated with the same program I use with my watch!

TRAINING PEAKS is not only something that you can use on your computer, but has a great ap for the I Phone which automatically syncs to  your computer..  It also works much like Map My Run and even allows you to track your food intake.  You can actually micromanage your diet by calculating calories, along with protein, carbs, and fat percentages..  At first, I was  overwhelmed, but after an hour of downloading Matt’s program and inputting my information I can already tell this will put me on cruise control until the race!  Much like a GPS all I have to do is follow the directions and I should reach my goal with no problem!

A special thanks goes out to Todd, and Matt!!

Another reason why I love doing Triathlons…

                         This community is so encouraging!

“Keep running the race!!”   Hebrews 12!!!!

Just Signed Up For Louisville’s IRONMAN… WHAT NOW!?!?!?!

I never thought the day would come where I was willing to venture off and tackle 140.6 miles of a swim, bike, run, BUT today is the day!  Maybe it’s the unseasonably warm weather, but the urge to sign up for this event was just too strong!  I have literally not been able to get it out of my mind ever since I had foot surgery in December.  Heck, I even have dreams about jumping in the water and the excitement of knowing that  I have a whole 17 hours to cover 140.6 miles…

Wow, now the reality is setting in.. 140.6 miles!!!! WHAT WAS I THINKING!!!!

As I take a step back, I can’t help but get a new sense of motivation to run for something bigger.

I truly believe this journey will be more of a spiritual one than any.. One that will draw so many levels of desire..Passion.. AND Emotion…

I know!!! RUN FOR A PURPOSE!!! A local store in Naperville; the Warchest Boutique came to mind and their mission to stop human trafficking. Something that has really been drawn to my heart in recent years. This evil is closely tied to a huge heroin epidemic in our area.  These two just seem too close to home, so why night run for awareness… I will be thinking and praying for  the victims of slavery.. This will be the driving force to rising  for the occasion and really putting every thing I have into running the race.

Soon I will have a link and a page that I will provide those willing to donate for this cause and support W.A.R. International.

Stay tuned!

A Look Back at 2011.. Escape From Alcatraz, Indi Mini Marathon, Batavia Tri, Steelhead, Chicago Marathon…

Looking back at last year I have a quick glimpse of events that were highlights for me.  The biggest was the person holding the camera.. MY WIFE!  Thank you Jenny for being there every step of the way!

My hope is that this encourages you to keep running your race of life!  There are so many surprises and obstacles, but through it all there is “One” who is with you in everything you do, feeling everything you are feeling..  Jesus… Hebrews 12:1-3 “the ultimate Ironman”

Ironman has risen to become the ultimate endurance series – one with a community that has a global reach that spans worldwide across all ages and walks of life. The brand has morphed into a lifestyle that’s represented by a unique and tight-knit group of ambitious and courageous individuals who aren’t afraid to push their personal limits. Over the years, many of these unique athletes and their incredible stories of perseverance at the Ironman World Championship have been showcased in the media, including here on It is amazing what people have overcome to pursue their dream of racing in Kona, and despite the fact that we are left believing that their stories can’t be topped…season after season we’re proven wrong.

This morning Ironman launched Kona Inspired, a program that will not only provide a venue for even more athletes to share their stories, but also put the power in the hands of you – the endurance community – to pick eight inspirational individuals to compete in the 2012 Ironman World Championship.

Beginning today, March 1, you can upload a 90-second video sharing how you represent the Ironman mantra, Anything is Possible, by going to or the Kona Inspired App. on our Facebook page. Once the video is uploaded, the community will watch, share and vote on their favorite inspirational athletes.

Kona Inspired video submissions will be accepted through May 31, at which point the entries will be narrowed down to a group of 45 semi-finalists by Ironman representatives based on online votes, views and their representation of the Ironman mantra. The semi-finalists will then be randomly split into three groups of 15 to be voted on during three, two-week voting cycles. Each voting cycle will result in two winners (six total) based solely on the videos with the top number of online votes by the endurance community. Once those six winners are chosen, Ironman representatives will choose two more “wild-card” stories from the remaining semi-finalists, taking into account online votes, to bring the total to eight Kona Inspired athlete stories. The eight winners will receive slots to the 2012 Ironman World Championship and will be highlighted as media athletes.

The inspirational stories of athletes crossing the finish line in Kona have helped to shape Ironman into the global sensation that it is today. Kona Inspired will be an exciting opportunity that unites the global endurance community in picking an amazing group of athletes to represent them at the Ironman World Championship in 2012. Who will be the next Team Hoyt or Lew Hollander?
